Turmoil Times for YG Entertainment as Yang Hyun Suk and His Brother Resigns

YG Entertainment’s misery seem to have no ending, with the latest being the voluntary resignation of Yang Hyun Suk. As announced on Friday, Yang Hyun Suk stepped down from all his positions in YG Entertainment amid the controversy of involvement in B.I’s illegal drugs scandal and supply of prostitute to business partners.

The year seem to be jinxed for one of the top Entertainment companies in South Korea. YG came in to bad light at the start of this year when ex-Big Bang member Seungri got caught up in the Burning Sun controversy. Things got even more entangled for him when it was revealed that Seungri was one of the active members in a Kakao chat group created by Jung Joon Young to share pornographic videos and images without the consent of the women involved.
This controversy and the number of top artists involved in it shook the Kpop industry and its fans. The next issue looming around and still under investigation is on tax evasion by YG. There were reports that YG presented incorrect earnings in order to evade tax liability. The company didn’t show the entire earnings from its artists’ overseas performances rather it was added to individual earnings of the artist. There are also some irregularities found in the stock transaction of the agency which is considered to be carried out with Yang Hyun Suk’s knowledge.

iKon, who’s ‘Love Scenario’ bagged Golden Disk Song of the Year Award 2019, saw the exit of its rapper and singer-songwriter B.I. after being accused for trying to purchase illegal drugs. Dispatch, a local media outlet in South Korea, exposed this news on the grounds of a Kakao chat between the ex-iKon member and a convicted drug offender. Where the rapper insistently asked for some LSD, even after repeatedly being warned on turning into an addict by the other person in the chat. B.I stated the reason for buying drugs that he wanted to become a genius. In June, he announced his exist through an Instagram announcement.

Two days later, YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun Suk announced his resignation. There are suspicion that Yang Hyun Suk may have suppressed  Han Seo Hee's testimony on B.I’s drug issue. However, YG denied such allegations.

Prior to this, there were reports of Yang bringing in prostitutes for his business partners. In light of the rumors, Yang Hyun Suk departed from YG. Following his footsteps, Yang’s younger brother Yang Min Suk also stepped down from his position at YG Entertainment within few hours.

As the investigation goes on, only evidenced and testimonies could shed light on which allegations were true and which were meant to defame the artist or the company. For now, the kpop fans and especially the fans of the artists in YG Entertainment are in grave despair with the events unfolded since the beginning of this year.

Junhyung of Highlight and Choi Jong Hoon of F.T.ISLAND Quits Showbiz after the Scandal

This week of March saw shocking revelations and announcements following the Kakao Talk chat group with members from entertainment industry being involved in sharing discreet videos of women without their consent. By the end of the week the third person to have put down his paper on entertainment industry is Junhyung of Highlight followed by Choi Jong Hoon of F.T.ISLAND on the same day.

The first person to come to light was Seungri, ex-member of Big Bang, who announced his retirement on Monday, 11th March after being charged with bribing investors with prostitutes and sharing indecent videos of women on a chat group without consent.

Jung Joon Young, singer of Drug Restaurant, was the second one to come to light in relation with the incident. The singer admitted to the charges of sharing over 10 videos of women he had sexual relations with. He posted an apology to the victims and declared his exit from all activities of showbiz that he was involved in on Wednesday, 13th March. He underwent questioning by police and was asked to submit his cell phone on Wednesday.
The day following witnessed Highlight Junhyung’s agency, Around US Entertainment, putting out a statement to inform the fan’s his exit from the group. The fans kept questioning on Junhyung’s involvement in the scandal after his name went out in public.

Junhyung has admitted to viewing the videos uploaded by Jung Joon Young and appeared as a witness during the questioning on Wednesday. His agency had first denied the claims but later put out a well phrased statement saying, “Some time at the end of 2015, Yong Junhyung met Jung Joon Young at a drinking gathering. The next day, while contacting each other 1:1 via Kakao Talk, he was informed that Jung Joon Young filmed illegal, hidden camera footage. Afterward, Junhyung admitted that he viewed this hidden camera footage, and he and Jung Joon Young went on to exchange inappropriate remarks about the footage.

We learned of the facts stated (above) through Yong Junhyung's witness questioning. After realizing the severity of this situation, Junhyung took part in his questioning diligently, and he is now in a deep state of reflection for his past inappropriate actions, as well as for the disappointment that he undoubtedly caused many due to his immorality.
He is also aware that this incident is not one that can be forgiven, and he feels greatly apologetic toward fans of Highlight for breaking their trust and repaying their love with disappointment. In order to take responsibility for his actions and prevent further damage to the group's image, Junhyung will leave Highlight as of March 14, 2019.

Even when Junhyung became involved in an unfavorable scandal, we were unable to obtain the clear facts right away and released a hasty statement, causing confusion; for this, we apologize. We will take caution so that such incidents do not occur again. We apologize one more time to fans who cherish Highlight.”
As for Choi Jong Hoon of F.T.ISLAND, he name was mentioned by SBS FunE as Mr. Choi of the chat group. He has been charged with spreading illicit image of a women and having a lewd conversation regarding the videos with Jung Joon. His agency, FNC Entertainment, released a statement on 14th March saying, “Choi Jong-Hoon, who has aroused criticism due to his involvement in recent scandals, has decided to depart from FT Island as of today. Choi Jong-Hoon will faithfully participate with police investigations within this week. He will permanently leave the team and retire from the entertainment industry.

We bow our heads in sincere apology for neglecting proper management and character education of our artists and for worrying many people through unpleasant events. We strongly feel the severity and responsibility towards the matter and will do our best to cooperate so that the facts will clearly be uncovered during police investigations.”

He is also facing accusation of bribing the police to cover up a DUI that happened in 2016. There were text conversations regarding the same between the members of the scandalous Kakao Talk chat group.

Jung Joon said, “Jong Hoon could have made it to the front page of news.”
Choi Jong Hoon replied, “Why would I make it to the news. I took care of it quietly.”

Seungri answered, “Don’t expect to get help next time you get involved in drunk driving incident. 000 hyung shut everyone up using his own money.”

We fans surely didn’t expect such a scandal to blow out taking down people whom we once admired. This only calls for caution to all the members of idol groups (male and female) and solo artists, whose actions are closely monitored by a great number of people who support their act, to not take advantage of the position that they are in to do any defame-able and derogatory actions that may lead to a uproar.

Jung Joon Young Admits to Uploading Videos without Consent, Quits the Entertainment Industry

In the latest from the Kakao Talk Chat group controversy pertaining to Seungri and other renowned names of entertainment industry, Jung Joon Young (JJY) who was said to be a suspect in participating in uploading discreet videos of women without consent, has admitted to the allegations.

JJY flew in from USA on 12th March for questioning. He admitted to have filmed women without their knowledge during the period 2015-16. He then shared those videos in a chat group on Kakao. In his statement to Korean Herald, he said, “I admit to all my crimes. I filmed women without their consent and shared it on social media chat room, and while I did so I didn’t feel a great sense of guilt”.

The 30-year-old apologised stating, “I kneel down to apologise to the women who appeared in the videos and all those who might be disappointed and upset at this shocking incident.

I will faithfully cooperate with the investigation by the police that will start on Thursday and I will readily accept whatever punishment is in store for me”.

JJY is the second artist to have quit the industry following Seungri who announced his retirement on 11th March. Will this scandal grow any bigger with other prominent faces involved as it is claimed that the chat group had 8 members? Only time can tell.

Big Bang Seungri’s Big Bang Story

No crime stays hidden for long, especially if you live a public life. The latest one to hit the headlines and take Kpop fans by a storm is the scandal surrounding Kpop’s renowned band Big Bang’s youngest member Seungri.

Before EXO or BTS became sensational, Big Bang was the top dog of Kpop. Seungri, the maknae of the group, was always seen  being playful and lightening up the mood. The vocalist is now caught in allegations of illegal prostitution and circulation of pornography. After the news spread on social media, the Singer announced his retirement from the Entertainment industry.

Where It All Began:
From all the investigation that I could do based on the information available in the white web, the misfortunes began with a complained about an assault on a customer by the staff of the “Burning Sun” club.

During the investigation, footage surfaced of use of drugs and sexual misconduct on female customers of the club. Even though Seungri claimed that he was just an Executive Director and was involved only in the publicity of the club but not in day-to-day operations, he still posted a formal apology regarding the matter. This matter spanning from early January 2019 to February and if the singer had thought his sufferings were over, he was mighty mistaken.

March began with news of investigation of a KaKao Chat group formed by Seungri with artists of other boy band and solo artists. This revelation was made by SBS FunE. Neither the police nor the netizens would have bothered if it was just a group of guys talking about how stressful it is to live a celebrity life. Instead, the group was said to be formed in order to share inappropriate images and videos of women whom the members fraternised with. Also, these images were shared without the consent of the involved women. Seungri is also said to be involved in supplying prostitutes to businessmen in Seoul night clubs.

About the controversial Kakao Talk Chat Group:
It is said that there were 8 members in this group including the singer and an employee of club ARENA. Other celebrities names connected to this group are Jung Joon Young, Junhyung (Member of Highlight), Choi Jong Hoon (member of F.T. Island) and Kang Daniel. The agencies of all these artists have denied the claims, while assuring to get clarification regarding the matter from the respective artists. After police confirmed the legitimacy of claims against Seungri regarding the chatroom, the Big Bang member took on the social media to announce his retirement in order to preserve the integrity of the band members and his agency, YG Entertainment.

YG Entertainment:
Yang Hyun Suk, the CEO of YG Entertainment, has held his peace but the agency put out a statement saying that the retirement comments were entirely the singer’s own choice and that he did not consult the agency regarding the same. The agency clarified that it is yet to make a decision regarding the future of the artist with them. Following this, YG Entertainment’s stock fell by 14% on 11th March.

How did Media Know about the Chat Group?
The twist in this story doesn’t end here. Apparently, there are reports stating that the existence of this group came into light when one of the members of this chatroom was getting his cell phone repaired. The repairing servicemen leaked it to media which surely raises questions of privacy amidst this shocking exposé.

Other Major Contributors in this Controversy:
A) Jung Joon Young (JJY)
Jung Joon Young caught his fame through MNET’s Superstar K4 (2012). Even though the singer took third position in the finals, his cover of Sympathy made an impression on all. Following which he released mini-albums, became a part of 2 Days 1 Night TV show and lead vocalist to rock band- Drug Restaurant. The singer took a break from his TV show following the investigation on claims made by his ex-girlfriend of sexual abuse in 2016. The same was withdrawn a few days later and JJY returned to the show.

In the recent controversy involving the Kakao chat room, the year 2016 is dragged again in relation to JJY. Dating back to 27th January 2016, when Zico (Member of Block B) and JJY appeared on MBC’s Radio Star and Zico mentioned about the “Golden Phone” owned by JJY. Zico made it very specific that it was unlike the regular phones and that the phone was used only for Kakao Talk. When Zico asked him if he still owned the phone, JJY got shy and replied that he did have it.
JJY also added that Zico would come to his house and ask for the golden phone and lay on his bed while going through the phone. During that time netizens didn’t ponder much on this golden phone but now it makes more sense.

Reports have it that JJY has shared more than 8 hidden camera videos of women in the group made by Seungri and in 1-to-1 conversation with other celebrities friends starting from late 2015 to late 2016. He also shared discreet images of a female employee during the same period.

B) Choi Jong Hoon (CJH)
The F.T. Island guitarist was brought into light with regards to this controversy by Channel A News. They published blurred images of two artists whom netizens identified as JJY and CJH. CJH is said to be a very close friend of Seungri and the two have been business partners in multiple ventures.

There has not been any explicit evidence to his participation in sharing any videos but the channel claims of him to be a member of the chat group. This wouldn’t be his first encounter with such an issue. Like his friend JJY, CJH has been accused by a woman of sexual assault. She was threatened and forced to send him discreet images of herself back when she was in sixth grade and the guitarist was in middle school. This allegation was made during the recent ‘Me Too’ drive.

What lies ahead for Seungri, JJY and CJH?
Seungri has been prohibited from leaving the country and the upcoming Big Bang concerts have been cancelled. The singer said that he was retiring from the entertainment industry as this controversy is too much to handle. He is being investigated by the police with regards to the allegations.

As of now, JJY is in USA with regards to his work and has been asked to come back to South Korea at the earliest for investigation. He had tours lined up for coming months which have been cancelled and 2 Days 1 Night TV show producers have confirmed the exit of the singer from the show and any footage regarding him will be edited out.

And for CJH, there has not been any statement from his agency as this discovery is the latest in this scandal.

If any of the above mentioned artists are found to be guilty of supplying indecent images and videos of women without consent then they could face jail time of 3-5 years and a penalty fee upto 30 million won. Not to state the obvious, their music career is buried.

What’s up with Ex-Cube Entertainment couple- HyunA and E’Dawn?

I was looking through all the Kpop news and wondering what else was buzz other than BTS preparing for another album, EXO messing up our tempo with their Tempo, Blackpink members’ dating news, Wanna One disbanding (I cried on this one) and bam! There it was! HyunA shared a video clip of her and E’Dawn recording a duet. Rumour has it that HyunA wants to indicate their engagement with the highly intriguing lyrics of the song.

In August last year, E’Dwan and HyunA opened up about their relationship and the fans did not respond well. The fans totally cool with the couple as they looked adorable together, but were furious about the fact that the couples “secretly” dated for two years. Following all the fuss, the two left Cube Entertainment and E’Dawn also left his group Pentagon (I’ll never get to see Pentagon perform Shine live, more crying).

Post their exit from their Agency, both posted ample of photos of themselves, showcasing the beautiful relationship they shared. E’Dawn also posted a heartfelt letter apologising to his ex-band mates for leaving the group. Pentagon fans stood divided on whether the decision of throwing the artist out is a correct one indeed. The shares of the agency also took a dip as an after effect of the controversy.

Her & His story:
Before we go any further and reveal the latest in this life story. I would like to drag you back to the debut days of the two artists.

Her:
HyunA was first signed up with JYP Entertainment where she debuted as the main rapper with Wonder Girls in 2007. She saw a busy year ahead and hectic schedule lead to fainting spells and physical ailment due to which she departed from the group and the agency.

The following year she joined Cube Entertainment and became a part of 4Minute girl group. They debuted in 2009. In 2010, she released her first solo single “Change” that saw good reception and also released a couple more singles the same year. The year 2011 marked the beginning of the solo career of HyunA with the release of Bubble Pop. The mini album’s title track saw global success and also appeared on Billboard’s 21 under 21.

HyunA’s agency paired her with Beast’s Hyunseung to form a co-ed group Trouble Maker. They released a self-titled mini album in 2011. She also made her appearance in Psy’s “Gangnam style” being personally chosen by the singer himself. This brought her global attention along with the success of the song. Her second mini album was released in the same year under the title Melting. This album saw lyrical contribution by HyunA and a cameo by Psy.

In 2014, A Talk, the third album was released and its lead single “Red” was listed on the Rolling stone’s Top Ten Music Videos of 2014. The following year she released her fourth album A+. On june 2016, 4Minutes was officially disbanded and only HyunA continued with the agency. Her fifth album A’wesome was released in August of the same year and the next year, her sixth mini album Following was released.  HyunA and E’Dawn became members of a new unit “Triple H” under the agency in 2017.

His:
E’Dawn was under JYP Entertainment during his Trainee days. In 2012, he left JYP Entertainment and joined Cube Entertainment. His first screen sharing with HyunA was in 2015, while performing Roll deep song. Pentagon, a 10-member boy band was formed under Cube Entertainment with E’Dawn as a rapper in it. The group debuted in 2016. The next year, E’Dwan became a part of Triple H group along with HyunA and Hui.

Their Story:
On August 2018, images of E’Dawn and HyunA hit the internet and speculations of them being in a relationship caught fire. Their then agency, Cube Entertainment, were quick to respond and denied all allegations. Later that day, the duo held a press conference and spoke out the truth. They were seeing each other for the past two years (as if fans hadn’t already picked up the hints). A month later and after a lot of behind the camera talks, their agency came to the conclusion of letting the two artists go. In October 2018, the representatives of Cube Entertainment expressed their lack of faith on the two artists due to the recent events. To the artists’ dismay, they got to know of their expulsion via media.

Latest Story:
After all the tough times of keeping the relationship under wrap and when it came out, to face the opposition of their agency, E’Dawn and HyunA seem happier than ever. They often take on twitter to share pictures with each other. In the latest of this saga was a short video shared by HyunA on twitter dated 04th January 2019, of the duo listening to a song recording written by them. Apparently the lyrics, as interpreted by the fans, states HyunA calling E‘Dawn fiancée.
HyunA: I promise everything, fiancée, A batch of Peony flowers have bloomed.

E’Dawn: You and I walk the same path, we walk the remaining time together every day. Our relationship shines brighter than the 100-carat diamond.

If these lyrics doesn’t fuel the fire, I’ll be damned. What are ya’ll doing? E’Dawn and HyunA… Show us the bling-bling already.

BTS the first Korean Music Group to Speak at United Nations

BTS continue to make history as they attended the United Nations’ 73rd General Assembly on September 24, 2018 (Monday) and spoke of their “Love Yourself” campaign which was started along with UNICEF followed by a series of album released under the same title. The group have been promoting the notion of ‘Loving oneself before loving others’. In RM’s own words, “Loving others first starts from loving ourselves”.

The “Love Yourself” campaign is focused on violence against children and teenagers and was started in November 2017. All the member of the group stood by as RM, who being the group leader became the voice of BTS. His speech urged people to speak up and that they were ready to hear the stories regardless of the speaker’s race, gender or geography.

The full speech as delivered by RM:
“I’d like to begin by talking about myself. I was born in Ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea. It is a really beautiful place with a lake, hills, and even an annual flower festival. I spent a very happy childhood there, and I was just an ordinary boy. I used to look up at the night sky and wonder, and I used to dream the dreams of a boy. I used to imagine that I was a super hero who could save the world. In an intro to one of our early albums, there’s a line that says, ‘My heart stopped when I was maybe nine or ten.’ Looking back, I think that’s when I began to worry about what other people thought of me, and started seeing myself through their eyes. I stopped looking up at the night skies, the stars. I stopped daydreaming. Instead, I just tried to jam myself into the molds that other people made. Soon, I began to shut out my own voice, and started to listen to the voices of others. No one called out my name, and neither did I. My heart stopped, and my eyes closed shut. So, like this, I, we, all lost our names. We became like ghosts.

But I had one sensory, and that was music. There was a small voice inside of me that said, ‘Wake up, man, and listen to yourself.’ But it took me a long time to hear music calling my real name. Even after making the decision to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles. Some people may not believe, but most people thought we were hopeless. Sometimes I just wanted to quit. But I think I was very lucky that I didn’t give it all up. And I’m sure that I, and we, will keep stumbling and falling like this. BTS has become artists performing in those huge stadiums and selling millions of albums right now, but I am still an ordinary 24-year-old guy. If there’s anything that I achieved, it was only possible that I have my other BTS members right by my side, and because of the love and support that our ARMY fans all over the world make for us. And maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’ll be me too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.

I’d like to say one last thing: After releasing our Love Yourself albums and launching the ‘Love Myself’ campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world. How our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves. Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility. So let’s take all one more step. We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself. I’d like to ask all of you, What is your name? What excites you and makes your heart beat? Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, your gender identity, just speak yourself. Find your name and find your voice by speaking yourself. I’m Kim Nam-joon, and also RM of BTS. I am an idol, and I am an artist from a small town in Korea. Like most people, I’ve made many and plenty mistakes in my life. I have many faults, and I have many more fears, but I’m going to embrace myself as hard as I can, and I’m starting to love myself gradually, just little by little. What is your name? Speak yourself. Thank you very much".
BTS have been healing people with their music and now they are strengthening their fans and ordinary people to stand strong against violence. On a personal note as an ARMY, I feel proud of everything these boys have achieved through their music. They surely are changing the world view, one person at a time.

Here are some highlight moments from the event:

The First Openly-Gay K-Pop Singer – Holland

There is a first for everything and this time making the mark is solo artist Holland who has come out to become the first openly gay K-Pop singer with his debut song Neverland.

Holland released his first single Neverland on 22nd January (I know my article is coming six months late but I only found out about him now) as an independent artist. The song spoke of his decision to express openly his sexual preference. In the K-pop universe, the matter of LGBT is rarely heard of but his MV received a reception of over 7,00,000 views within the first 24 hours. His twin singles I’m Not Afraid and I’m So Afraid have also received a warm welcome from the audience.
Holland in an interview mentioned that the lyrics to his songs were written by him based on his life experiences. He also mentioned that he had confided that he was gay to one of his close friends. But his friend revealed it to other students at school which led to the singer getting bullied to the extent that he was dragged around the school playground with a rope around his neck.
The singer further added that some of the kids who bullied him are now being promoted as actors and singers in Korea. During his school days, he even tried to commit suicide but survived and was supported by another friend. Being a victim of homophobic bullying, Holland still suffers from PTSD and depression.

According to Holland, the message he wants to send out to all the LGBT community through his music is ‘You have nothing to be ashamed of. You have the right to live your life normally as anyone else. You can share your own stories.’ He added that he wanted to give them hope.

Holland had to write and record his songs on his own as no Entertainment Company wanted to promote a gay singer. Following the release, the singer was a recipient of both hate and love but he thanked his fans for expressing their support to his music.

On a personal note, I have heard the songs and they are absolutely beautiful. I hope that Holland will keep on making more music with such beautiful messages and that he receives a lot of support from his colleagues in entertainment industry. Hwaiting!

(To Readers: If any of my readers are anti-LGBT, please silently move over this article. Any defamatory or derogatory comments will be removed. The owner of this blog does not support any discrimination based on gender or sexual preference of any individual)

Some honourable mentions that almost made it to the list are Run (The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Pt.2, 30th November 2015), Dope (Young Forever, 2nd May 2016), Awake (Wings, 10th October 2016) and Miss Right (Skool Luv Affair, 14th May 2014).

I hope that you find this information helpful and inspire you to listen to these seven cupids sing. I could assure you BTS doesn't make music just for the sake of selling it but they tell their stories through these lyrics. Enjoy it!

P.S.- I'm going to be in so much trouble if my mom deciphers some of these lyrics. Hence, they are mentioned in Hangul and Romanized form.😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
